“You,” Danis said to the man towards the front of the group. “You’re Kyne Minnah, aren’t you?”

He looked at her and smiled.

There was no mistaking him: a tall, slim man, aged about thirty with a mop of sandy-colored hair and a long, trailing mustache. She recalled the file picture she saw before the drop. “Prince Elio sent us here to rescue you. How many of you are there?”

Kyne pursed his lips, then sighed heavily. “Yes, I’m Kyne. In all, just thirty. We’ve been searching for more survivors but…” He shook his head. “No luck so far. The capital’s completely destroyed.”

So many lives lost, Danis thought. They can’t be the only ones…

But from the looks on their dejected faces, that seemed to be the case. Kyne nodded to one of the people in his group. “That’s Yarrow.”

Yarrow held up his hand weakly in a half-hearted wave; his fingernails were caked with dirt.

“He worked at a Dutrinium processing facility before… before all of this started.”

“I think we were attacked so aggressively because they want the Dutrinium for themselves,” Yarrow said, scratching his scalp.

Danis didn’t want to burst his bubble. She knew the truth. They’re not after just our minerals. They want it all. And they want all of humanity annihilated.

Danis had pondered the Swarm’s mission many times over the past months since the Swarm’s initial attack, and she’d discussed it with her brother and friends. Humankind had always naively and arrogantly thought they were God’s gift to the galaxy—the one intelligent species meant to rule and dominate. Are the Slipstreams really causing a rift in the universe itself? she wondered. Is the Swarm justified in their quest for a reset? We humans have always felt justified… Or is the Swarm just greedier than we are?

“That’s Tara,” Kyne continued with his introductions, bringing Danis back to the present.

“And this is Mozzley.”

The old man, clearly more than a hundred years old, managed a small smile. His face, heavily lined and tanned dark from a life under the sun, was brightened by a pair of sparkling, iridescent blue eyes. What little hair he had left was pure white and wispy and probably should have been shaved off decades ago.

“He’s— ” Kyne started to say, but Mozzley finished.

“Retired… These kids have lugged me into their schemes.” His forehead glistened with sweat.

Dubois pointed at Yarrow, who had the octagonal device tucked under his arm and said, “What is that? How did it… do what it did?”

Yarrow held it up for the others to see.

“Neat, right?” Kyne said, obviously proud of it. “It’s just a modest prototype, but it works.” He stood up straighter and put his hands on his hips. “I intend to develop it further, if we get out of here alive.”

“It’s much better than the last version,” Tara said.

“Humph, the last version was garbage,” Yarrow mumbled.

Kyne eyed him coldly but didn’t comment.

“Yes, but what is it exactly?” Major Dubois said, followed by a loud exhale.

“It’s an EMP generator,” Kyne said.

“An EMP?” Danis asked. “An electromagnetic pulse generator.
